Permit Required Confined Space

When workers enter into working spaces that are not necessarily meant for human occupancy, where potential hazards exist, and entrance or egress might be hindered there are special requirements that must be adhered to. This training will be conducted to make student aware of steps he/she needs to take to protect himself and what steps are needed if the space has additional hazards.

  • Identifying confined spaces and their hazards;
  • Methods to safely ventilate your confined space;
  • Proper utilization of gas monitoring equipment;
  • Duties of supervisors, entrants, and attendants;
  • Requirements for rescue services & personnel;
  • Steps necessary to temporarily reclassify a non-permit required confined space to a permit space;
  • How to take advantage of OSHA's alternate entry procedures

Required by: OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 (g)(1), (2)(i)-(iv), (3), (4) & (k)(1)(i)-(iv)

Frequency: Initially upon employment, upon a change in assigned duties, upon a change in permit space operations presenting a hazard about which an employee has not previously been trained, whenever there are changes in the permitting procedures, or if there are inadequacies in the employee's knowledge or use of procedures.

Target Audience: Any employee whose job requires entry into permit-required confined spaces. HAR, Plumbing, Steam Plant & exterminators in Plant Operations and/or Plant Services are among those with the potential for this exposure. Carpentry shops and contractors could also be exposed in remodeling efforts.
